Effects of Imbalanced Blood Lipids

How do imbalanced blood lipid levels affect my health?

Imbalanced levels of LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides contribute to coronary heart disease. Plaque, a thick, hard deposit, can slowly build up in the walls of the arteries. This condition is known as atherosclerosis, or "hardening of the arteries." This build-up can block blood flow to the heart, causing a heart attack, or block blood flow to the brain, causing a stroke.

  • Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the single largest killer in the United States.
  • One of every five deaths is the result of CHD.
  • About every 30 seconds, someone will suffer a coronary event.
  • About every minute, someone will die from a coronary event.
